Preview: The Secret World

Having come across the news of this games existence some months back I had always meant to look at this one further, but for reasons known to me (World of Warcraft) I had completely forgotten about it, until now.

The Secret World is the latest massively multi-player online game under development by Funcom. This is the same crew responsible for games such as Anarchy Online and Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures both garnering acclaim and credit and now they are set to move into a new arena. This is of interest to me as it is basically how I feel about the MMO scene in general – I need a change of scenery. I’ve battled the dragons and I’ve flown amongst the stars but I haven’t, in an MMO at least, battled outside my front door. It looks like Funcom is attempting to take us to this ‘unfamiliar’ space as it were, with a slight twist (I mean who would really want to battle their post man for his route?).

The gurus at Funcom are putting forward this idea of a real modern day world where every myth, legend and conspiracy theory was actually true – zombies, werewolves, vampires and possibly an alien or two could all be out there. They aren’t simply restricting themselves to a particular country either, with the promise of real-world locations throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and America there should be plenty of room for the madness. From the available clips, artwork and screenshots it kind of gives me a Resident Evil slash Silent Hill slash Left 4 Dead feeling, and that is a good thing for me as I love all three.

While details are slim they do confirm that there will be plenty of action-packed combat and even more tools in which you can do that. Whether you enjoy swords, guns, martial arts or magic they seem to be packing in quite a deal of options for you to turn to when dispatching your enemies. Coupled with the fact that there are no set classes or levels should really put you in control of your character – do what you want to do and how you want to do it.

The Secret World also features standard MMO features such as:

  • Player-made organisations and create your own customisable headquarters
  • Players vs player combat
  • Next-generation graphics

So there you have it. With the little amount of data out there, I am completely and utterly interested. Now I would just like a bit more information, some gameplay footage and I think I will be set till release date. Here is hoping it provides us with a new alternative to the alternatives that are already out there on the MMO circuit.
